McAfee is a long-standing participant in the antivirus industry. The company was established in 1988. It is well-known for its firewalls, antispam products, encryption of files and public key infrastructure. It is most well-known, however, for its anti-virus product and is a major player in the market. Security suites from the company provide comprehensive protection against malware and viruses and are supported by a one-million dollar identity theft guarantee.
All of McAfee’s plans include a fully-featured malware scanner that can block the entry of malware into your computer system and kill or block the viruses that have already infiltrated it. The real-time protection engine of McAfee helps to prevent malware files from downloading. It also redirects data and encrypts it to ensure that your online activities isn’t hacked and used against you.
In our tests, McAfee repeatedly achieved top marks in test of AV-Test’s 0-day and our malware test. It also scored 100% on our privacy tests.
The interface is clear and simple to navigate. Accessing features such as parental controls and identity theft protections is an issue, though. The dashboard is divided into separate menus. Support isn’t easy to find. The McAfee Community Forum is active, but Techmaster Concierge will be required to help you with more complex issues.
McAfee’s system scan did not eliminate some junk files from our test systems. It also does not offer an option to drag and drop a folder or a file into the suite for scanning like many of its competitors do. This is a major no-no for a security suite that costs this much.
